Why mini-splits dominate ADUs
No ductwork = lower install cost (typically $5,500-$9,500 vs. $14k+ for ducted central). Independent zone control between bedroom and living area. Ultra-efficient inverter operation. Quiet outdoor unit fits in a 2-foot setback.
When to choose central anyway
ADUs over 1,200 sq ft, or designs where the architect wants flush ceilings throughout. Otherwise, a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat or Fujitsu Halcyon multi-zone is the right call almost every time.
